Colorado Springs— Ducati has set its sights on taking back the course motorcycle record at the 96th running of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo.
Ducati motorcycle team record holder Carlin Dunne and current middleweight record holder Codie Vahsholtz will make up the 2018 Spider Grips Ducati Pikes Peak team for the Race to the Clouds on June 24. This year’s race will also include the introduction of the new Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak.
The Pikes Peak Heavyweight Division will be a must-watch event for race fans and Ducatisti around the world. Ducati has garnered six victories on America’s Mountain since the company’s debut in 2008 and held the all-time course record from 2012 until 2017, a year in which Ducati was not part of the official race competition.
Dunne was the first motorcyclist to conquer the backbreaking Pikes Peak race course in less than ten minutes (9:52.819), achieved on the game-changing Multistrada 1200 S in 2012, and this year marks his return to Ducati’s racing team. In 2017, he led the Pikes Peak Squadra Alpina as part of the Race Smart program, which was created in 2016 by Ducati in partnership with the PPIHC. The program utilizes the experience of former champions to ensure all rookie motorcycle entrants have the highest level of preparation and knowledge prior to tackling the serpentine course to the summit of the Peak at 14,115 feet.
“After holding the course record for many years, we had decided to use our experience on the mountain to help support the safety of riders with the introduction of the Squadra Alpina program and keep the tradition of motorcycle racing on the mountain. Our efforts proved to be successful,” said Jason Chinnock, Chief Executive Officer of Ducati North America. “After 2017, when Dunne’s record was finally broken by a small margin, it inspired us to race again with the goal of reclaiming the title. The riders, team and new Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak are destined to be a force on the mountain.”
New to the team but not to the race is rider Vahsholtz, a Woodland Park, Colorado native who comes from a family of Pikes Peak champions. He has recorded series victories of his own with the record time in 2017 for the Middleweight Division, the record time in 2015 for the Lightweight Division and in 2013 for the 250 Pro Class. With the 19 victories of his grandfather, Leonard Vahsholtz, coupled with the 23 wins by his father, Clint Vahsholtz, he carries on the family legacy that has produced the most Pikes Peak victories by any family.
The debut of the Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak will showcase the versatility of the new, larger displacement Multistrada. The 1262 cc Ducati Testastretta DVT engine delivers 18% more torque in the mid-range and is paired with a redesigned chassis for increased stability. In addition, the motorcycle is fitted with a cutting-edge electronics package with distinct Riding Modes, Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control and Wheelie Control to improve control in all conditions on the mountain. A motorcycle built for sport adventure, the new Multistrada 1260 is available in the standard version, the Multistrada 1260 S and Multistrada Pikes Peak.
Ducati is partnering this year with Shell Advance, Brembo, Pirelli, Termignoni, Spider Grips, Ducati by Rizoma, Race Tech, Revl and Racing Cowboys for the Pikes Peak event.

Colorado Springs, CO (May 15, 2018)—— The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, is pleased to announce the return of Matchsports for their second in a 10 year contract to broadcast ‘The Race to the Clouds’ live on Sunday, June 24th, 2018.
Despite the PPIHC’s 100+ year history, until last year, this prestigious event had only been broadcast on a delayed basis. Until then, the uniquely challenging environment on Pikes Peak thwarted all attempts to produce a high-quality live broadcast. SBI Media (Matchsports’ Swiss Parent) developed a solution to overcome the technical obstacles of Pikes Peak, America’s Mountain, and delivered a high-quality live broadcast covering the race course from start to ?nish.
With a successful year behind them, Matchsports incorporated on-course experience to develop new strategies to tell a richer story this year. Matchsports will not only increase the number of cameras on the ground but will bring enhanced technology and additional personnel to bring it to fans seamlessly.
“Our partnership with the PPIHC is moving from strength to strength, behind the scenes and publicly, forged on a mutual respect for the mountain and our ongoing commitment to deliver a world class production. Matchsports is honored to be here again. We have learned more, built more and will bring more this June,” explained James Kalogiros, CEO of Matchsports.
“By bringing new and better technology to Pikes Peak, we can offer fans a more intimate understanding of the race as we celebrate the LIVE era through a new Pay-Per-View (PPV) experience. Proceeds from the $4.99 subscription will be reinvested, bringing tomorrow’s production to the hill today, and we know race fans will embrace this opportunity to say they were a part of making it happen.”

This year’s 96th running of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will be a major focus on the Matchsports global calendar. One long-term goal is to attract an additional partner, possibly a major TV network, to assist in sharing the race with new audiences worldwide.
Matchsports harnesses the power of cutting-edge technology to deliver next generation efficiencies in broadcasting. Founded in Switzerland as an interactive sports and entertainment broadcaster, Matchsports designs and manufactures products and systems for the digital media space. No matter the complexity of the challenge, projects are turnkey and seamless based on the Matchsports mantra #ItJustWorks.
Dynamic connectivity and remote area production with end user interactivity were key elements of the Matchsports vision, well before its founding. Originally designed around a series of interactive products for the UCI World Tour, in 2014, the group diversified strategies and restructured technologies to encompass a much wider portfolio of sports and other events across the globe.
An (over the top) IPTV broadcaster, Matchsports delivers TV quality productions with new ways for audiences to experience events. The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was the group’s flagship event in the United States in 2017. That success established the group’s focus in the US where they are developing new partnerships with motorsport organizations, as well as golf, paragliding and cycling events.
About The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb:
The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, also known as the Race to the Clouds, is an annual invitational automobile and motorcycle hill climb to the summit of Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain – in Colorado, USA held annually on the last Sunday of June.
Founded in 1916 by Spencer Penrose (also the founder of The Broadmoor Hotel, Pikes Peak Highway and El Pomar Foundation), the PPIHC takes place on a 12.42 mile (19.99 km) public toll-road boasting 156 turns, while competitors climb 4,720 ft. (1,440 m.) from the 9,390 ft. (2,862 m.) Start Line at Mile 7 marker on the Pikes Peak Highway to the 14,115 ft. (4,300 m) Finish Line at the mountain’s summit. As the drivers and riders climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps competitors’ mental and muscle strength, in addition to robbing internal combustion engines of up to 30% of the power they are capable of producing at the Start Line. Competitors and their vehicles must be in top shape and condition simply to finish, let alone win.
The race is self-sanctioned and is the most diverse one day motorsports event in the world with everything from Sidecars, Motorcycles, and 1,400+hp Electric Vehicle & Unlimited racers competing in the same event.KEEP READING

Colorado Springs—– Flying Lizard Motorsports and Toyo Tires® have partnered to enter an auto in the 2018 Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo. PPIHC legend Clint Vahsholtz will be in the driver’s seat of the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports/Toyo Tires 2014 McLaren 12C, a throaty 616-hp, 3.8-liter V-8 flyer, in the Time Attack 1 Class.
Vahsholtz (Woodland Park, CO) owns 23 championships on America’s Mountain since 1992, the most by any competitor in the grand history of the race. After switching from motorcycles to autos in 1996, he collected 16 titles in the Super Stock Car Division, including 11 straight wins from 1996-2006. Vahsholtz holds the Super Stock Car record of 10:55.603 set in 2011.
The former NASCAR driver won the Pikes Peak Challenge – Open Wheel Class crown last year in his 2013 Ford Open with a class record time of 9:35.747, and he’s looking forward to a new challenge on the mountain this summer.
Vahsholtz will face stiff competition in the Time Attack 1 Class, featuring 23 drivers from seven nations. Hill Climb veterans Fumio Nutahara (2012 Electric Division winner), David Donohue (2nd in Time Attack 1 last year at 9:49.954), James Robinson (3rd in Time Attack 1 in 2017 at 10:03.433, and current Alternative Fuel-Hybrid record holder), and Fred Veitch (2014 Time Attack 2 Production Class champion) are among the entries in the field. Belgian driver Vanina Ickx, a 24 Hours of Le Mans veteran, will join the group in her rookie debut on Pikes Peak.
“I am very excited for the 96th running of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, and my new partnership with Flying Lizard Motorsports and Toyo Tires this year,” said Vahsholtz. “With the precise car set up and engine tuning of Flying Lizard Motorsports for the McLaren 12C and the extreme grip of Toyo Tires on what can be a very slick course surface, I’m looking for my 24th win.”
“It is always a huge pleasure to welcome Clint Vahsholtz to the race,” said PPIHC Executive Director Megan Leatham. “He’s the winningest driver in Pikes Peak Hill Climb history, and his amazing record and skill partnered with the broad-based appeal of Flying Lizard Motorsports will be exciting to watch.”
“When this opportunity was first brought up, we knew we couldn’t pass this up,” said Flying Lizard Motorsports Program Manager Darren Law. “We’ve had a lot of success with Toyo Tires in our tire development program, and we’re really looking forward to this event and a new challenge.”
“The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a bucket list item for any motorsports fan in the world and we are thrilled to partner with Flying Lizard Motorsports, McLaren and Clint Vahsholtz this year,” said Marc Sanzenbacher, Senior Manager, Motorsports for Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. “Pikes Peak is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the grip and performance of our Toyo® Proxes® Race Slicks as the race presents many unique challenges for a tire due to the bitter cold, uneven road surface, and constantly changing conditions.”

Colorado Springs—-2018 Olympic figure skating bronze medalist Chris Knierim will be behind the wheel of the Official Pace Car for the 2018 Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, on Sunday, June 24.
Knierim and his wife, Alexa Scimeca Knierim, captured the bronze medal in the team event in PyeongChang. In the pairs free skate, the Knierims became the first USA pair and the second pair in history to successfully perform a quad twist at the Olympic Winter Games.
“It’s a surreal honor to be selected as the Official Pace Car Driver for the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb,” said the Olympic star. “I say surreal because I can still remember the first couple of times that my Dad let me work on cars with him. In hindsight, I wasn’t doing much more than passing a wrench or holding a light, but it brought us closer together and also forged my love of cars at a very young age. There’s a part of me that still feels like that 10-year old Chris–the one that was holding the light is now leading the pack! It’s all wonderfully surreal.”
“It’s also an honor, and I say that because I understand and appreciate the history and heritage of this event. The 96th running–with 156 turns and nearly 5,000 feet of climbing–will undoubtedly be one for the ages, and I’m humbled to play a small part in such an iconic American sporting event,” added Knierim.
“Chris is the perfect choice to drive the Official Pace Car,” said PPIHC Executive Director Megan Leatham. “Colorado Springs is Olympic City USA, Chris and his wife train here, and the city has hosted this unique motorsport event since 1916.” Knierim enjoys working on cars and hopes to open his own auto shop. He graduated from Pikes Peak Community College in 2015 with an associate degree in diesel mechanics.

Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Superstar Rhys Millen returns for the 2018 Race to the Clouds in a Bentley Bentayga
Colorado Springs—Rhys Millen, one of the most celebrated drivers in the history of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, will be back at the start line for the 96th edition of the world famous race on June 24.
Millen will be behind the wheel of a 2017 Bentley Bentayga in the Pikes Peak Challenge Exhibition Class with five other drivers who will tackle the rugged course to the summit of 14,115-foot peak of America’s Mountain.
The two-time King of the Mountain has chalked up five overall titles, and multiple class wins on the mountain, beginning with his 1992 crown in the Pikes Peak Open Class, piloting a Mazda on his way to Rookie of the Year honors. He took the title last year in the rugged Time Attack 1 Class, driving his 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe and clocking 9:47.427.

Millen made history in 2016, winning the Electric Modified crown in a ‘16 eO PP100, with a time of 8:57.118, joining Sebastien Loeb and Romain Dumas as the only three competitors to finish the course in under nine minutes.
The race-ready Bentayga, featuring an unmodified 600 bhp, 900 Nm (664 lb.ft) Bentley W12 engine, has been prepared by a special team in Bentley’s motorsport department in the UK.
The car has been built as close to production standard as possible, with minimal changes in accordance with PPIHC Production Class rules.
A full roll cage, on-board fire suppression system, racing seats and harnesses will support Millen’s assault on the mountain. Production tires will be supplied by Pirelli, and the auto will run with a custom exhaust system from Akrapovic, which also produced the bespoke exhaust for the Bentley Continental GT3-R motorsport-inspired model. In every other respect, including the air suspension with 48V electric active anti-roll control, the car will mirror the unmodified production Bentayga, the fastest SUV ever built.
“The opportunity to race with Bentley at Pikes Peak is one that I couldn’t pass up,” said Millen. “I visited the Bentley factory in Crewe, England, last month and was amazed at the level of skill that goes in to handcrafting these cars. I also had the chance to drive the race-prepared car for the first time and was blown away by the performance that’s already available. I’m really looking forward to preparing for the race, competing on the mountain with Bentley and hopefully establishing a new SUV marker.”

In winning, he became the first second-generation driver to win the Indy 500, following in the footsteps of his father, Al Unser, Sr. He also became the third member of the famous Unser family to win the race. “Little Al “ also won the 1994 Indy 500 with Penske Racing, joining his father Al Sr., and his uncle, Bobby, as winners of multiple 500s at Indy. He was tagged Pikes Peak King of the Mountain in 1983, taking the Open Wheel crown in his Wells Coyote Chevy.
