Colorado Springs, Colorado. Porsche has been racing since its first vehicle rolled off the small assembly line and immediately went to a hill climb… and won. In 1958, the first Porsche came to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. In 1960, Robert Donner, Jr. drove a Porsche RSK to the sports car manufacturer’s first division win. In 2020, his son, David Donner (Colorado Springs, Colorado), raced a Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport to the marque’s 29th victory with a time of nine-minutes, 36.559-seconds in the Time Attack 1 Division. On June 27, a baker’s dozen of Porsche privateers will challenge “America’s Mountain” in the 99th Running of Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you Gran Turismo, near Colorado Springs, Colorado spread across three divisions: Time Attack 1, Pikes Peak Open and the bespoke Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama. Pikes Peak is North America’s second oldest motorsport event, just behind the Indianapolis 500, and will celebrate its centennial edition in 2022.

The 12.42-mile, two-lane road winds over 156 turns as it climbs from its 9,390-foot starting line, up Pikes Peak to the finish at 14,115-feet. The all-time race record is seven-minutes, 57.148-seconds set by Porsche factory driver Roman Dumas (France) in 2018 driving the electric Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak prototype race car. The current Time Attack 1 record for production-based cars is 9:23.721 established in 2019 by French rally racer Raphael Astier in a modified Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car which had been fitted with a turbocharger. Travis Pastrana (Annapolis, Maryland) holds the Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama course record in a Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport at 10:33.897 set the first year of the division, 2018.

As it was in 2020, Porsche is in-line to make a challenge for the overall win when the race returns to its traditional date in June. Leading the effort will be Dumas who returns to Pikes Peak in a Porsche. As announced on February 15, the Frenchman will team with longtime dealer and motorsport partner Champion Porsche to field a 911 GT2 RS Clubsport in the popular livery of the Florida operation. While his all-time record may remain safe, the outright victory is within the grasp of the track-only variant of the road-going Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Major competition in the Time Attack 1 Division will come from David Donohue (West Chester, Pennsylvania) who was a leading contender in the BBi Autosport-prepared Porsche in 2020. A third Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport – a twin-turbocharged machine capable of 700 Hp – has been entered by Germany’s Christoph Breuer. It will be his first attempt at the event which is also wildly popular in Europe and Asia.

Two more Europeans will travel to Colorado this summer with first-time aspirations in the Time Attack 1 Division with Porsche-built race cars. Laurent Millara (France) has entered a 2008 Porsche 911 GT3 while Steve Zimmer (Luxemburg) has modified his Porsche Cayman GT4 for the intense competition of Time Attack 1.

Five of the dozen Porsche entries in the “Race to the Clouds” come in the invitation-only one make division known as the Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama. Headlining the group of contenders, all racing the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport race cars, is veteran rally and stunt driver Tanner Foust (Newport Beach, California). Challenging Foust will be 2020 Rookie of the Year Kathryn Mead (Austin, Texas) who is making her second start in the Cayman race car after an impressive run that caught organizer’s and fan interest alike. Local George Hess is back for another attempt to sit atop the division standings as is Charles “Chas” Wirken (Mesa, Arizona). Cameron Ingram (Durham, North Carolina) is the fifth entry in the division. Ingram – whose Road Scholars is a longtime supporter of eight-time event winner and division coach Jeff Zwart (Aspen, Colorado/Long Beach, California) – is making his competition debut in the new mid-engine Porsche after intense preparations.

The Pikes Peak Open Division is home to three Porsche-based entries. Astier – who calls Huntington Beach, California home – returns to try and better his production-car based event record in the BBi-built turbocharged, modified 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. Andy Kingsley (Buena Vista, Colorado) faces down the challenge in a modified twin-turbocharged 2002 Porsche 911. Colorado Springs’s own Chris Strauch looks to impress his neighbors in the division with a 1970 Porsche 914 “Wide Body” he has modified.

The first Pikes Peak Hill Climb was run in 1916 on a gravel circuit carved up to the Mountain’s summit. By 2012, the full 12.42-mile, 156-turn circuit was paved over, up to the 14,115-foot pinnacle. The race itself starts at the seven-mile marker giving competitors a 4,725-foot elevation change during their timed run.

Erik Skirmants, Event Manager, Pikes Peak, Porsche Motorsport North America.

“The Pikes Peak Hill Climb’s heritage in North America, and the strong international following it has, continues to be an excellent venue to showcase Porsche strengths in competition. Power to weight is critical in a hill climb, as well as the tested durability of our motorsport cars. We have a few modified/shop-prepared Porsches as there has always been but with the introduction of the turn key Clubsport models, we have shown that Porsche has series produced models that are instantly competitive on the world stage. We are very happy with the mix of competitors who will be showing that the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport sets the bar for versatility and speed exactly as produced.”

Megan Leatham, Executive Director, Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

“The excitement of our event is definitely elevated by the presence of Porsche on the mountain. The racing technology that Porsche presents, along with the top-tier drivers they attract, really takes competition to the next level. Combine that with their history on Pikes Peak, going back to the late 1950s, and the number of wins and records set over the years, and Porsche is undoubtedly a major player.”

Andrew Briggs, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management, Yokohama Tire.

“The Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama has become a classic race. Each year the competition is incredible. For Yokohama, it’s been a tremendous honor to combine our heritage on the mountain with our ongoing support of Porsche activities in North America, and we’re excited about this year’s Race to the Clouds.”

Colorado Springs, CO – The collective hearts of the Board of Directors and staff of The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation are saddened by the sudden passing of CEO Tom Osborne.

At the helm of the largest and most iconic sporting events in Colorado Springs, Osborne left an impressive mark on the Rocky Mountain State Games, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the Labor Day Lift Off and the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame, to name a few.

“He was an incredible man, a great leader and a friend,” said Dave Palenchar, Chairman of the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation.  “Tom loved The Sports Corp, he loved the community and he touched an unbelievable number of people personally and through Sports Corp events in the last 18 years.  We’re grateful for all that he did for our organization and the Colorado Springs community. He was more than one in a million – he will be deeply, deeply missed.”

Osborne was a 1978 graduate of Montana State University-Billings, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education.  He was the founder of the Big Sky State Games in Montana, and served as the Executive Director from 1985 to 1993.  Under Osborne’s leadership, the Big Sky State Games grew to become the largest State Games for athlete participation per capita.

Serving as the Executive Director of the National Congress of State Games from 1993 through 2003, Osborne assisted in the creation and execution of the State Games of America, the national State Games, managed the national office, and was directly involved in fundraising, sponsorship, and grant solicitation.  He was elected President of the National Congress of State Games in 2003.

He was a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee Board of Directors and served on its Executive Committee from 1996 through 2000 and on numerous committees and task forces, including the Delegation Review Committee and the Equestrian Hearing Panel.

Osborne joined the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation as the President & CEO in 2003.  Under his leadership, the organization grew its flagship event, the Rocky Mountain State Games, from 14 sports and 2,000 athletes to over 20 sports and 10,000 athletes annually in just a few short years. The organization successfully hosted the State Games of America an unprecedented three times, in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

Well-known and well-respected, Osborne was a pillar in Colorado Springs – the community that he loved. In addition to his role with The Sports Corp, he served on the board of directors for The Broadmoor World Arena, Visit Colorado Springs and The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb – both as Chairman & Vice Chairman.

“He will be remembered for his ability to attract sporting events to the Pikes Peak region, from the Warrior Games, to premier cycling events, the Colorado Classic and the USA Pro Challenge,” stated Doug Martin, Chief Operating Officer.  “Tom’s love of this city and the sporting venues it offers was the catalyst in bringing new events, tournaments, and national governing bodies to Colorado Springs.”

Under Osborne’s leadership and his wealth of knowledge in event management, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb once again attained the status and significance envisioned by its founder, Spencer Penrose, more than 100 years ago.   “Tom was an incredible leader whose love for the Colorado Springs community was evident every day he walked into work,” shared Megan Leatham, Executive Director of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. “In the 10 years he has championed our event, he has made such a positive impact on everyone who was lucky enough to know him.  He was a treasured friend and mentor and has left an impressive legacy.”

Osborne’s genuine love of sports at any level was contagious, but was always second to his dedication to his family and friends.  He is survived by his wife, Amy; daughter, Ellie (Cameron) Kuehne; son, Ben (Kassy) Haughton and the light of his life, granddaughter, Charlie Rose Kuehne.

Colorado Springs, CO – The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, is pleased to announce the return of reigning course record holder, Romain Dumas in a Porsche Clubsport specially-prepared by Champion.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Romain and his team back to Pikes Peak. It will be a real treat for our fans to watch him compete,” said Megan Leatham, Executive Director.

Dumas’s racing history on America’s Mountain began in 2012 when, as a rookie, he captured the Pikes Peak Open division behind the wheel of a 2012 Porsche GT3R, setting a new division record in the process. Three subsequent wins in the Unlimited division aboard his iconic Norma M20 RD Limited added three King of the Mountain titles to his world-class race resume.

In 2018, Dumas was back behind the wheel of the all-electric Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak, a nine-month concept to competition engineering marvel, where his proven knowledge of the course paid off. The former course record, 8:13.878, set by Sébastien Loeb and Peugeot just five years earlier, was shattered when Dumas laid down a blistering time of 7:57.148 and established a new benchmark.

When asked about his return to competition on Pikes Peak, Dumas replied, “I am very happy to be back on Pikes Peak with Champion and Porsche. This is my first race with Champion, but I know them well from endurance racing. They are really motivated and excited to discover Pikes Peak.”

Etching a new record on America’s Mountain was only the first stop on a worldwide circuit to prove the I.D. R’s exceptional speed and handling. In 2019 Dumas and Volkswagen broke the electric vehicle lap record at the Nürburgring and set a record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Later that year, Dumas make a breathtaking 6.77 mile run up Shan Big Gate Road on China’s Tianmen Mountain.

In preparation for Pikes Peak, Champion Porsche and Champion Motorsports have joined forces to compete in the 99th running with a Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport entered in the Time Attack 1 division. In a fitting return to his Pikes Peak roots, Dumas, a Porsche factory driver, will showcase the excellence of the Champion-prepared Porsche racing vehicle as well his ability to conquer the mountain.

Champion’s deep racing history began with Porsche in the 1990s and continued with Audi in the early 2000s, including victories at the 12 Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans. Their most noteworthy achievement came in their fourth attempt at the 24 Hours of Le Mans when they celebrated the overall win in 2005. This victory at the legendary French circuit made Champion Racing the first US team to claim overall victory at the event since Carroll Shelby’s win in 1967 – 38 years earlier. In 2021, Dumas and Champion will sport the #38 on Pikes Peak in tribute.

  • Champions Dallenbach and Shute
  • Scott Birdsall and “Old Smokey” defend diesel-powered record
  • 2020 Rookie of the Year, Kathryn Mead, returns
  • State-of-the-Art Electric Vehicles
  • Rookies to Watch
  • Third-generation Vahsholtz

Colorado Springs, CO – The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, has invited more than 65 competitors to take part in the 99th Running of the Race to the Clouds on June 27, 2021. Organizers will welcome drivers from nine countries and 18 states.

One of the most exciting aspects this year will be the presence of spectators, once again, on Pikes Peak-America’s Mountain.

CHAMPIONS FEATURED

Two former King of the Mountain award winners Paul Dallenbach and Robin Shute will be back on Pikes Peak in June to challenge the 12.42-mile course. Dallenbach (Basalt, CO) holds three King of the Mountain trophies, has seven additional division wins and will run in the Open Wheel division.

Shute (Norfolk, UK) the 2019 King of the Mountain is back in the #49 Wolf GB08 TSC as part of the Unlimited division. Unable to attend in 2020 due to the global pandemic, Shute is eager to be back on Pikes Peak where he will face ten other Unlimited entries including JR Hildebrand, 10-year IndyCar competitor.

DIESEL DEFENDER

Diesel recordholder, Scott Birdsall (Santa Rosa, CA) returns with “Old Smokey,” an eye-catching 1949 Ford F1, to defend his 2020 diesel-powered record – 11:24.065. Other diesel-powered challengers include Gregiore Blachon (Nashville, TN) in a 2021 VW Bug Proto TRI-TDI Diesel and newcomer Pat O’Keefe (Martinez, CA) in a 2015 TA2 Camaro powered by a Twin-Charged 3.0L Ecodiesel engine running 100% renewable NexDiesel.

MEAD RETURNS

The Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama division will include the 2020 Rookie of the Year, Kathryn Mead (Austin, TX), a retired astrophysics professor turned racecar driver. Speaking of her first year on Pikes Peak, Mead shared, “I felt well prepared but you still have to execute, and race day at Pikes Peak is the only time that you get to drive the whole mountain. When I crossed the line it was the most euphoric I’ve ever felt in my whole life. It was the hardest but coolest thing I’d ever done.”

Six other competitors in the one-make Porsche division, all sporting Yokohama tires, will round out the group.

GREEN MACHINES

Randy Pobst (Gainesville, GA) returns in a 2020 Tesla Model 3 in the Exhibition division. Pobst’s spectacular crash just past the Bottomless Pit wall on the second practice day in 2020, appeared to end his racing effort; however, after three round-the-clock work sessions his dedicated crew presented a race-ready car on Sunday and Pobst captured second place in his division.

Formula Drift Championship Series competitor, Dai Yoshihara (Cerritos, CA) capped off the 2020 competition. As the final competitor to challenge the mountain, Dai blasted to the summit in his 2013 Toyota 86 to win the Unlimited division. Yoshihara returns to America’s Mountain in June, this time in the Exhibition division behind the wheel of a 2018 Tesla Model 3.

Fumio Nutahara (Hokkaido, Japan) was forced to take a hiatus from Pikes Peak last year due to the pandemic, but he returns in 2021 with a novel electric-powered car, a 2022 GLM ZZ to run in the Unlimited division.

PROMISING ROOKIES

An internationally certified instructor at the BMW Performance Center in South Carolina, Laura Hayes (Inman, SC) will compete for the first time behind the wheel of a 2021 BMW M2CSR when she joins the Time Attack 1 division. No stranger to Pikes Peak, Hayes piloted the Parade of Champions BMW in 2020, leading the competitors from the Summit back to the Start Line, post-race.

Perhaps the most exciting ‘rookie’ is three-time Pikes Peak motorcycle division winner, Codie Vahsholtz, who will compete for the first time on four wheels. Vahsholtz will pilot the monstrous 2013 Ford Open driven by his father, Clint, last year. Clint Vahsholtz became King of the Mountain in this dominating Open Wheel machine with a time of 9:35.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 3, 2020

MOTORTREND’s ALL-NEW SERIES REACHES NEW HEIGHTS WITH PIKES PEAK: ON THE EDGE

–All-New Series World Premieres Wednesday, December 16, 2020 Exclusively on the MotorTrend App–

(Los Angeles) – Automotive thrill seekers, get excited! MotorTrend is taking viewers to new heights in the fast-paced, all-new three-part special PIKES PEAK: ON THE EDGE, premiering Wednesday, December 16 on the MotorTrend App, the leading subscription streaming service dedicated entirely to the motoring world. PIKES PEAK: ON THE EDGE documents the inside story of this year’s Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, as seen through the eyes of competitors risking their lives on America’s most dangerous race course.

More than 12 miles long, Pikes Peak is a death-defying challenge for the most experienced drivers. At high speeds they must navigate blind turns with very few guardrails in a climb reaching more than two-and-a-half miles above sea level in Colorado’s majestic Rocky Mountains. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb requires months of preparations and, for some, more than a year of work just to qualify.

In Part one, “14,115 Feet Up,” of PIKES PEAK: ON THE EDGE, six drivers—some who are amateurs seeking glory and some who are pros seeking redemption—prepare for America’s ultimate racing challenge. Veteran driver Dai Yoshihara hopes his team can get his Toyota 86 to perform while former powerboat racer Chris Becker hopes he’s prepared enough to stay out of the trees this year. All have their eyes on the summit of Pikes Peak, 14,115 feet into the sky.

Part two, “You Don’t Spin at Pikes Peak,” starts with a challenging 3:00 A.M. practice session where multiple cars crash and some drivers struggle with cars that continue to break down. Who will survive to race day? In Part three, “The Mountain Decides,” each driver gets just one shot to make it up the mountain, but not all will reach the summit. One driver surprises himself by destroying a record while another driver comes up just short.

Stream all three parts of PIKES PEAK: ON THE EDGE beginning Wednesday, December 16, 2020, exclusively on the MotorTrend App.

Additionally, the MotorTrend App offers more than 8,000 episodes and more than 3,600 hours of world-leading automotive series and specials including the most complete collection of classic TOP GEAR (200+ episodes and specials spanning seasons one thru 27), the upcoming TOP GEAR AMERICA and the all-new NASCAR 2020: UNDER PRESSURE, plus every season of SPEED RACERWHEELER DEALERSROADKILLFAST N’ LOUDBITCHIN’ RIDESHOT ROD GARAGE, TEXAS METAL and many more. The MotorTrend App is available on media players and streaming devices including Amazon FireTV, Apple TV, Roku, Google Chromecast and on the web, as well as across iPhone, iPad, and Android mobile devices.

PIKES PEAK: ON THE EDGE is produced for MotorTrend Group by TangentVector.
